Living room with kitchenette 26m2 – how to arrange a small living room with kitchenette in an apartment block?

If you are furnishing an apartment in a block of flats and have a living room with a kitchenette of approximately 26m2, this article is for you. This is a particularly common situation in apartments for a couple, a family of 2+1, or people who want to combine a comfortable relaxation area, dining space and functional kitchen in one open-plan interior.

Using our 26m2 living room with kitchenette project as an example, we show how to plan a small interior so that it is bright, elegant, comfortable and practical for everyday use. We focus on the functional layout, colour palette, materials, lighting and details that are especially important in a compact space.

The article is based on real design work and our experience in online apartment design. We do not discuss a detailed renovation budget or technical implementation stages here, but we show the design decisions that help avoid chaos, visual overload and randomness.

Key design conclusions

  • In a 26m2 living room with kitchenette, the most important thing is a clear division into zones: kitchen, dining area and lounge.
  • A light colour palette visually enlarges the interior and brings order to the entire arrangement.
  • Oak wood warms up the space and works well with the modern classic style.
  • Wall mouldings add elegance, but they must not overwhelm a small space.
  • Kitchen cabinetry up to the ceiling increases storage space.
  • Layered lighting makes it possible to adjust the atmosphere of the interior to different situations.
  • In a small living room with kitchenette, every piece of furniture should have a specific function.

Living room with kitchenette 26m2 – when does this solution make sense?

A living room with a kitchenette in a block of flats is a solution that works well when we want to make maximum use of the available space. Instead of dividing the apartment with additional walls, we create one open daytime zone where we can cook, eat, relax and spend time with the family.

With an area of 26m2, however, maintaining the right proportions is crucial. The kitchen must not dominate the living room, the table should not block circulation, and the sofa must be chosen so that it provides comfort without taking up too much space.

In our project, we designed the interior for users 2+1. This meant combining aesthetics with everyday convenience: storage space, a comfortable table, a comfortable sofa and a kitchen that would be practical for regular use.

The most common wrong assumptions when arranging a small living room with kitchenette

  • Assuming that everything will fit into 26m2 without compromises.
  • Choosing a sofa or large corner sofa that is too big.
  • No clear division between the kitchen, dining and lounge zones.
  • Using colours that are too dark and visually reduce the interior.
  • Random lighting limited to one ceiling lamp.
  • Too many decorations and open shelves, which create a sense of chaos.

How to make the right design decisions?

When designing a small living room with kitchenette, we always start with function. We ask ourselves: how do the household members use the kitchen, do they often eat at the table, how much storage space do they need, should the living room be used mainly for relaxation or also for work or playing with a child?

Only then do we move on to the style. This makes the interior not only attractive in visualisations, but above all comfortable in everyday life. In a small space, every decision must be justified.

Our design method for a 26m2 living room with kitchenette

Step 1 – functional layout

In this project, we divided the space into three clear zones: kitchen, dining area and living room. We designed the kitchenette in a layout that uses the corner and tall cabinetry, thanks to which we gained plenty of storage space without visually overwhelming the interior.

The table was placed between the kitchen and the living room. This is a natural solution in a small apartment, because the dining area becomes a link between cooking and relaxing. For a family of 2+1, this layout works well both every day and when hosting guests.

The lounge area was planned by the window. As a result, the sofa benefits from natural light and the living room feels more spacious. The TV unit, display cabinet and coffee table were chosen in a light form so as not to overwhelm the interior.

Step 2 – colours and materials

The colour scheme of the project is based on a calm palette: white, beige and delicate shades of grey. This is a base that works well in small interiors because it reflects light and creates a calm background for the entire arrangement.

Oak wood appears on the floor, worktops, table, coffee table and furniture in the TV zone. Thanks to this, the interior feels warmer and more natural. In the modern classic style, balance is very important – elegant details should not make the space feel too formal.

Wall mouldings introduce a classic character, but they have been used in a subtle way. They do not compete with the furniture, but organise the walls and add depth. Green accents in accessories and plants break up the neutral colour palette, preventing the interior from feeling monotonous.

Step 3 – lighting and details

In a small living room with kitchenette, lighting cannot be accidental. In this project, we used several layers of light: a decorative lamp above the table, linear lighting by the ceiling, task lighting in the kitchen and technical spot lighting.

This solution allows the interior to be used in different ways. We need different lighting when cooking, different lighting during dinner, and different lighting in the evening when the living room becomes a calm relaxation zone.

Mirrors in the dining area are also an important detail. They reflect light, visually enlarge the space and enhance the elegant character of the arrangement.

Variants and exceptions

Not every 26m2 living room with kitchenette should look the same. If the room is narrower, instead of a classic table, it is worth considering a smaller extendable model or a peninsula. If the kitchen is highly visible from the entrance, it is worth choosing smooth handleless fronts and cabinetry reaching the ceiling.

In apartments with less natural light, it is better to avoid dark fronts and heavy furniture. Contrast can be added through details, such as black light fittings, handles or picture frames.

Typical mistakes and how to fix them

  • Problem: the table blocks the passage. Solution: choose a narrower tabletop or place the table closer to the wall.
  • Problem: the kitchen looks heavy. Solution: use light fronts and uniform cabinetry up to the ceiling.
  • Problem: the living room feels empty. Solution: add textures: fabrics, wood, mouldings and curtains.
  • Problem: the interior feels chaotic. Solution: limit the number of colours and repeat the same materials in several zones.
  • Problem: there is no atmosphere in the evening. Solution: plan decorative and LED lighting, not only the main lamp.

Living room with kitchenette 26m2 in modern classic style – an example of our project

In this project, we wanted to create an interior that would be elegant, but not overly formal. The clients needed a comfortable space for a family of 2+1, so from the very beginning we looked for a balance between a representative look and everyday functionality.

We designed a light base with beige walls, decorative mouldings and oak wood. Thanks to this, the interior is cohesive, cosy and timeless. The kitchen was planned to make maximum use of storage space, while at the same time not dominating the living room.

The dining area plays a very important role here. A wooden table with upholstered chairs introduces comfort and softness. Above it, there is a decorative lamp with spherical shades, which gives the interior a modern character and defines the central point of the arrangement.

In the living room, we used a light sofa, a coffee table, green accents and wall art. These elements warm up the space without taking away its lightness. The design comment here is simple: in a small interior, it is not about the number of decorations, but about choosing them well.

Checklist before arranging a 26m2 living room with kitchenette

  • Does the kitchen layout allow comfortable cooking?
  • Does the table block the passage between the kitchen and the living room?
  • Is the sofa adapted to the floor area, not only to aesthetic expectations?
  • Do you have enough closed storage?
  • Are the colours consistent in the kitchen, living room and dining area?
  • Have at least three types of lighting been planned?
  • Do the accessories not overwhelm the interior?
  • Have comfortable passages between zones been maintained?

Project visualisations – inspirations for a small living room with kitchenette

Bright 26 m² living room with kitchenette in modern classic style

The view of the daytime zone shows how we combined elegant wall mouldings, oak wood and soft fabrics. Thanks to the light colours, the living room feels larger, and the open layout maintains freedom of movement.

Dining area as a link between the kitchen and the living room

The wooden table was placed centrally, which helps organise the entire space. Upholstered chairs in grey fabric add comfort, while large mirrors behind the table visually enlarge the interior.

Lounge area with a light sofa and green accents

The sofa by the window creates a comfortable place to relax. Green accents in cushions, wall art and plants break up the neutral base and introduce a natural, calm atmosphere.

Compact kitchen with tall cabinetry

We designed the kitchen in light colours, with a wooden worktop and wall panel. Tall cabinetry increases storage space, while under-cabinet lighting improves work comfort.

TV zone with wooden furniture and an elegant wall

The TV unit and display cabinet in oak wood warm up the interior. Wall mouldings behind the TV add elegance, while remaining a subtle background for the entire arrangement.

Layered lighting in a small living room with kitchen

The combination of decorative lamps, linear LED lighting and black spotlights makes the interior functional at different times of the day. This solution works especially well in an open-plan space.

FAQ – frequently asked questions about a 26 m² living room with kitchenette

Is 26 m² enough for a living room with kitchenette for a family of 2+1?

Yes, but only with a good functional layout. The size of the table, sofa and kitchen cabinetry must be chosen wisely. The biggest mistake is trying to fit in too much furniture without maintaining comfortable passages.

How to visually enlarge a small living room with kitchenette?

Light colours, mirrors, lightweight furniture forms, consistent materials and well-planned lighting work best. It is also worth limiting the number of decorations and choosing closed storage.

Does modern classic style suit a small apartment?

Yes, as long as it is used with moderation. Delicate wall mouldings, light colours and elegant lighting can look very good even in a small space. It is important to avoid heavy furniture and an excess of decorative details.

Can a table for 6 fit in a 26 m² living room with kitchenette?

In many cases, yes, but it depends on the proportions of the room. Sometimes an extendable table or a model with a slightly narrower top is a better choice. The most important thing is to maintain comfortable access to the kitchen, sofa and balcony exit.

What colours should be chosen for a small living room with kitchen?

Off-whites, beiges, light greys and natural wood work well. Colour accents are best introduced through accessories, such as greenery, wall art, cushions or plants.

Is kitchen cabinetry up to the ceiling a good solution?

Yes, especially in small apartments. Ceiling-high cabinetry increases storage space and makes the kitchen look more orderly. This is a solution we often recommend in living rooms with kitchenettes.

Summary and recommendation

A 26 m² living room with kitchenette can be comfortable, elegant and functional for a family of 2+1. The key is a good division into zones, a light colour palette, the right amount of storage and lighting adapted to the different functions of the interior.

In the presented project, we combined modern classic style with practical solutions for an apartment in a block of flats. We chose beiges, white, greys, oak wood, subtle wall mouldings and green accents. As a result, the interior is calm, cohesive and pleasant for everyday use.
