Room Design for a 9-Year-Old Boy – 14 m² Full of Football, Fun and Functional Solutions

This children's room design for 9-year-old Teodor from Lipowo shows that a 14 m² space can successfully combine studying, relaxing, playing and developing a child's interests. Functionality was just as important as giving the room its own individual character. Teodor is interested in football and enjoys being active, so sports-inspired elements were incorporated into the interior in a distinctive yet versatile way, ensuring that the room will not feel too childish in just a few years.

The most striking feature of the interior is undoubtedly the raised bed with a rope-net safety barrier, with an additional relaxation area created underneath. The room also includes a large desk, extensive storage space, a tall wardrobe and football-inspired details. As a result, the entire 14 m² room has been used efficiently from floor to ceiling.

Room Design for a 9-Year-Old Boy – What Does a Child of This Age Need?

A nine-year-old child's room has to serve many more purposes than a typical preschooler's room. It is a space where the child spends time after school, does homework, develops interests, relaxes and sleeps.

That is why we divided Teodor's room into several important functional zones:

  • a comfortable sleeping area,
  • a spacious study area,
  • storage for books and school supplies,
  • a large wardrobe for clothes,
  • a relaxation zone,
  • space for items connected with the child's interests,
  • and enough free floor space to move around the room comfortably.

Carefully planning these functions is one of the most important stages when designing a room for a school-age child.

A Loft Bed That Makes Use of the Room's Height

One of the most distinctive elements of this design is the bed placed on a raised structure. Instead of using a traditional bed that would take up a significant part of the floor area, we also made use of the room vertically.

The sleeping area is located on the upper level and surrounded by a tall structure with an eye-catching rope net. This solution gives the bed an adventurous, lightweight appearance while clearly separating the sleeping zone from the rest of the room.

Wide steps lead up to the bed. However, they are not used only for access – the steps also serve as practical storage compartments. This is a particularly useful solution in a child's room because it allows us to use space that would otherwise remain unused with a traditional ladder.

The white and grey bed structure works well with both the wooden floor and the darker elements of the interior.

How Can the Space Under a Loft Bed Be Used?

In Teodor's room, the area beneath the raised bed was not filled with additional cabinets. Instead, we created a cosy relaxation corner.

A large football-shaped bean bag fits perfectly with the interests of the room's young owner. It is a comfortable place for reading, gaming, using a tablet or simply relaxing.

Gaming-inspired wall art gives this part of the room a more casual atmosphere than the study area.

Using the space beneath a loft bed in this way is particularly effective in rooms of around a dozen square metres. The same floor area can therefore serve two completely different purposes.

A Large Desk for a 9-Year-Old – A Comfortable Study Area

A properly designed study area is extremely important in a school-age child's room. For Teodor, we designed a long worktop providing plenty of space for notebooks, books, a computer and other school supplies.

The natural wood-effect desktop adds warmth to the interior and balances the white furniture and darker walls.

Drawer units were placed on both sides of the desk. They provide plenty of space for school supplies and small items that can otherwise quickly clutter the worktop.

The study area is completed with an ergonomic gaming-style chair and a desk lamp.

An organisational pegboard with containers and a small shelf was also installed above the desk. It can be used for a school timetable, notes, drawings or art supplies.

This simple solution makes the study area both attractive and, above all, practical.

Storage Above the Desk – Making the Most of the Available Space

When designing a 14 m² children's room, it is worth making use of the wall space as well. Above Teodor's desk, we created an extensive storage arrangement consisting of open shelving in white and natural wood finishes.

The shelves provide space for books, schoolbooks, models, collections, decorations, keepsakes and items connected with the child's interests.

The open compartments vary in size, preventing the furniture from looking like a heavy wall of conventional cabinets. The individual modules create an interesting and slightly asymmetrical composition.

Small spotlights positioned above the shelving highlight selected areas of the furniture and create a cosy atmosphere in the evening.

Room Design for a Young Football Fan

A child's interests should be visible in their room, but they do not necessarily have to dominate the entire design. Football became the main theme in Teodor's room.

One of the most distinctive decorative features is the large football stadium wall mural. It covers a significant part of one wall and immediately establishes the character of the interior.

A silhouette of a football player appears on another dark wall, while original wall-mounted holders next to the furniture provide a place to display footballs.

Details like these are far more personal than random decorative accessories. They give the room an individual identity and clearly show what its owner is interested in.

At the same time, the main pieces of furniture remain neutral. This means that the accessories can easily be changed in the future if Teodor's interests evolve.

A Sports-Inspired Room with Gaming Elements

The design combines several of the nine-year-old's interests. In addition to the football-inspired features, there are also subtle references to gaming.

The gaming chair at the desk, posters underneath the loft bed and darker wall finishes give the room a character that can appeal not only to a nine-year-old but also to an older boy.

This is particularly important when designing rooms for children aged 8–12. It is worth creating an interior that will not require a complete renovation after only two or three years.

A Large Wardrobe in a Child's Room

Despite the room measuring only 14 m², there is also enough space for a tall and spacious wardrobe.

The wardrobe has simple light-coloured fronts and long dark handles. Its wood-effect side panel matches the desk, open shelving and wooden flooring.

Designed in this way, the wardrobe does not compete visually with the more decorative elements of the room. Instead, it creates a calm backdrop while providing plenty of storage for Teodor's clothes and belongings.

Storage capacity is extremely important in a child's room. In addition to the large wardrobe, the design also includes:

  • drawers beneath the desk,
  • storage compartments in the stairs leading to the loft bed,
  • open shelving,
  • closed cabinets,
  • and shelves above the study area.

As a result, every category of belongings can have its own dedicated place.

Colour Scheme for a Boy's Room – White, Wood and Dark Accents

The design uses a relatively timeless colour palette.

White, natural wood and graphite-grey and dark surfaces dominate the room. Navy blue also appears in elements such as the curtains and upholstered details around the sleeping area.

The wooden flooring adds warmth and ensures that the room remains cosy despite the use of darker colours.

The light-coloured furniture fronts also balance the bold stadium wall mural and the darker sections of the built-in furniture.

This is a good base for a school-age boy's room because it does not feel overly childish and can remain suitable for many years.

Lighting as Part of the Room Design

Several types of lighting were used in the project.

The central part of the room is illuminated by a modern ceiling track-lighting system. A separate desk lamp provides task lighting in the study area, while decorative spotlights highlight the shelving.

The effect is complemented by linear lighting installed along the ceiling.

This makes it possible to adjust the lighting to different activities – one type of light is useful when doing homework, while another creates a more relaxing atmosphere in the evening.

How to Design a 14 m² Room for a 9-Year-Old?

Teodor's room shows that 14 m² offers plenty of possibilities when the functional layout is carefully planned.

The key is to make use not only of the available floor area but also of the height of the room.

The raised bed made it possible to create an additional relaxation zone underneath. The stairs were transformed into storage compartments. The furniture above the desk provides space for books without taking up another wall, while the tall wardrobe offers plenty of room for clothes.

At the same time, the centre of the room remains relatively open.

This is why a good children's room design is not about fitting in as much furniture as possible. It is about arranging the interior so that every square metre has a purpose while still allowing the child to move around and use the room comfortably.

A Room for a 9-Year-Old Designed Around the Child

Every children's room we design is created for a specific user. A room for a child who loves LEGO will look different from one designed for a car enthusiast or a young football player.

In Teodor's case, the sports-inspired character became an important part of the design, but functionality was given equal attention.

The result is a room that combines studying, sleeping, storage, play, sport and relaxation.

Thanks to the neutral base of the design, many of the decorative elements can be changed in the future without rebuilding the entire room.

Teodor's Room Design – 14 m² Used from Floor to Ceiling

The room designed for 9-year-old Teodor from Lipowo is a good example of an interior where functionality meets a child's individual interests.

The loft bed with its rope net is the most eye-catching feature of the room, but behind its distinctive appearance is also a very practical solution. A relaxation area was created beneath the bed, the stairs provide additional storage, the long wall has been used for the desk and shelving, and the remaining part of the room includes a spacious tall wardrobe.

The football stadium mural, wall-mounted football holders, player silhouette, gaming-inspired accessories and football-shaped lounge chair make this much more than simply an attractive children's room. It is a space designed specifically for Teodor.

A good children's room design should respond to the child's needs today while also making it easy to adapt the interior to future stages of growing up.

FAQ – Room Design for a 9-Year-Old

How should you design a room for a 9-year-old boy?
