Youth bedroom 8–10m2 – how to plan a small space without compromises
A youth bedroom with an area of 8–10m2 is a very common size in apartments – and at the same time one of the biggest design challenges. In such a small space, there must be room for a study area, sleeping zone, storage, and a place for privacy. Without a well-thought-out plan, such a room quickly becomes cramped and non-functional.
At Fabryka Projektów, we regularly design online youth bedrooms exactly in this size range. Below, we show how to plan a small teenager’s room so that it is comfortable for everyday use and can “grow” together with the user.
1. Functional layout is more important than style
In a small youth bedroom, there is no room for random decisions. Before choosing wall colors or decorations, it is crucial to define the functional layout: where the bed will be, where the desk will go, how circulation works, and where storage should be planned.
This is exactly the principle we describe in more detail in the article How to design a functional youth bedroom – 7 rules from projects. In a small space, the lack of a plan is immediately visible.

2. The bed and the desk – two key points of the room
In an 8–10m2 room, the two most important elements are the bed and the desk. They determine the entire layout. Most often:
- the bed is placed against the wall so that it does not block circulation,
- the desk is located as close as possible to natural daylight,
- we avoid random furniture between these zones.
A well-planned layout makes the room not look smaller than it actually is.

3. Vertical storage instead of on the floor
One of the most common mistakes in small youth bedrooms is having too many pieces of furniture standing on the floor. Dressers, additional shelves, and storage chests quickly take up valuable space.
In a small area, it works better to use:
- floor-to-ceiling built-in furniture,
- wardrobes with smooth fronts,
- shelves above the desk or bed,
- drawers in the bed.
We always include such solutions in a youth bedroom project, because they realistically improve the functionality of a small space.

4. Lighting that does not overwhelm
In a small youth bedroom, lighting should be visually light but functional. One central light is not enough, but heavy hanging lamps also do not work well.
The best solution is a combination of:
- general lighting (a ceiling light or spotlights),
- a desk lamp for studying,
- delicate mood lighting near the bed.
We use this approach also in larger spaces, but in an 8–10m2 room it is of key importance.

5. A bright base and a limited number of contrasts
A small youth bedroom works best visually when it has a bright, coherent color base. A limited number of contrasts makes the interior feel larger and more organized.
It is worth introducing color and character through accessories: graphics, textiles, lighting, or details that can be easily replaced as the teenager’s taste changes.

When is it worth planning a small youth bedroom with a designer?
With an area of 8–10m2, every mistake is visible and noticeable on a daily basis. If you care about a functional layout, ergonomics, and an interior that does not require constant changes, it is worth designing a youth bedroom comprehensively – even before buying furniture.
