How can you combine the cosiness of a child’s bedroom with the furnishings a future schoolgirl needs? In this 9 m² bedroom design for a 7-year-old girl, we brought together cream cabinetry, wood-effect finishes and soft pink. The study area sits alongside tall storage units, while an upholstered bed creates a soft, comfortable corner for relaxation. The aim was to create an interior that meets a seven-year-old’s needs while leaving room to adapt throughout her school years.

The parents were looking for neither a typically childish design nor a room that already felt like a teenager’s bedroom. They wanted something between these stages: warm, organised and welcoming, with space for studying, books and all their daughter’s treasures. Below, we present the design visualisations and explain the key decisions behind this small space.

## Design brief: 9 m² for starting school and the years ahead

The starting point was a detailed description of the family’s everyday needs. The girl would be seven when the design was implemented, and the room was being prepared for the start of primary school. Her parents wanted her to feel equally comfortable in it at the age of twelve.

- **Colour palette:** dusty pink chosen by their daughter, beige or cream, and oak-style wood-effect finishes.

- **Study area:** a requested desk width of 140 cm and convenient drawers for supplies.

- **Storage:** room for clothes, books, toys and small items important to the child.

- **Relaxation:** an upholstered bed, bedding storage and soft finishes around the bed.

- **Opening furniture:** handles or comfortable recessed grips rather than push-to-open fronts.

- **Scope of changes:** refreshing the walls and replacing furniture and accessories while retaining the existing electrical points.

The brief also included a suggestion for a corner wardrobe and the idea of creating a reading spot in the window. These preferences help establish priorities, but they need to be assessed against the layout of the particular room. The visualisations show the proposed furniture arrangement without a separate window seat.

## Dusty pink, cream and wood-effect finishes without overwhelming a small room

We kept the largest surfaces of the cabinetry in a light cream tone. This allows the tall furniture to form a calm backdrop. A darker wood-effect finish appears inside the open shelving units and around the desk, highlighting the different sections of the cabinetry.

Pink is concentrated mainly in the upholstery of the bed and chair, as well as the textiles. This responds to the girl’s wishes without covering every wall in the same colour. Light curtains, sheers and soft accessories complete the warm palette.

Books, cuddly toys and small decorations provide most of the room’s child-friendly character. Shelving units topped with house-like roof shapes introduce a playful detail, while the simple wardrobe and desk fronts balance the overall composition.

## A desk beside the window and space for the first school supplies

The parents requested a 140 cm wide desk, a solution that had already worked well for their other child. This dimension was an important requirement when developing the study area. In the visualisations, the desktop sits beside the window, between sections of tall cabinetry.

The desk drawers make it possible to separate school supplies, art materials and small belongings. This is particularly important in a room where one desktop will be used for writing, drawing and pursuing hobbies. Storage close to the work area reduces the need for additional containers on the desk itself.

Above the desktop, we proposed a pegboard with organisers. It can hold stationery, small accessories and sheets of paper. Its regular pattern gives the study area a distinct identity while staying within the room’s calm colour scheme.

When implementing the design, the seat height and foot support should be adjusted to the girl’s height. A large desktop alone does not replace a properly configured study space.

## A wardrobe, drawers and shelving for a child’s treasures

In this design, storage is just as important as the appearance of the interior. The daughter wanted convenient drawers, while her parents wanted them to hold plenty of belongings. The arrangement therefore combines closed fronts with open shelves.

Tall cream cabinetry brings order to the area beside the desk. The visible vertical handles reflect the parents’ preference for opening furniture without push-to-open mechanisms. Beside it is a shelving unit for books and selected objects, so that not all of the child’s keepsakes have to be hidden away.

When planning the wardrobe interior, it is worth separating everyday items from spare textiles and seasonal belongings. The things used most frequently should be within the child’s reach. The upper sections can hold items retrieved with help from the parents.

The corner wardrobe suggested in the brief needs to be assessed primarily in terms of access to its interior and the opening of its doors. A large unit does not automatically mean convenient storage. In a 9 m² room, the space left in front of the furniture matters too.

## An upholstered bed and a cosy relaxation area

The sleeping area features a soft pink bed and an upholstered backrest along the wall. Cushions and a bedspread make it a cosy spot that can also be used during the day. A small upholstered piece beside the bed provides a handy surface for small items.

The parents requested bedding storage and a frame with the smallest possible footprint. When choosing a model, it is therefore important to compare the bed’s overall dimensions, not just the mattress size. The storage opening mechanism and the space needed to use it should also be checked.

An open arrangement of shelves is visible above the bed. Its visually light form provides space to display decorations, but the support and fixing method require separate construction detailing. The wall thickness stated in the brief is not enough to determine its load-bearing capacity or select suitable fixings.

With cabinetry like this, the wall material, expected loads and furniture construction matter just as much as the dimensions. We explain what information the contractor needs in our article on [technical drawings for the joiner and renovation team](https://f-projektow.pl/en/rysunki-techniczne-pokoju-dziecka-czego-potrzebuja-stolarz-i-ekipa-remontowa.htm).

## A reading spot close to the window

The girl enjoys reading and had begun looking for a comfortable spot by the window herself. This is valuable information about how she uses the room. However, the proposed design does not include a separate bench or a built-in seat on the windowsill.

The upholstered bed with cushions, positioned near the window, offers a place for quiet relaxation. It combines two functions without introducing another large piece of furniture. Evening reading also requires suitable lighting that takes the existing power supply options into account.

## A bedroom between childhood and the teenage years

The most important decision was to combine understated cabinetry with details suited to the girl’s current age. Cream fronts, wood-effect finishes and a simple desk do not impose a specific theme. Meanwhile, pink upholstery, toys and decorations keep the interior personal and child-friendly.

In a few years, there may be more books on the shelves, and some decorations may be replaced by objects connected to new interests. Changing the bedspread, artwork and storage organisation will help refresh the room’s character. The study setup will still need to be checked as the daughter grows and her needs change.

This is how we understand designing for the future: leaving room for change. We explain this in more detail in our guide to [permanent and replaceable elements in a child’s bedroom](https://f-projektow.pl/en/pokoj-dziecka-na-lata-ktore-elementy-zaplanowac-na-stale-a-ktore-latwo-wymieniac.htm).

## A makeover that retains the existing electrical layout

The parents clearly defined the scope of work: painting, new furniture and accessories, without relocating electrical points. This means that the furniture layout and lighting choices need to work with the existing installation.

Before ordering furniture, access to sockets and switches should be checked against the proposed cabinetry. Power for devices at the desk and cable routing also matter. The visualisation shows the appearance of the interior, while compatibility with the existing electrical points requires comparing the design with measurements and the electrical layout plan.

## How should you budget for a similar design?

**We do not state the cost of completing this room because we are not presenting a confirmed cost estimate here.** A floor area of 9 m² alone is not enough to price the work. Factors include the extent of the cabinetry, upholstery choices, drawer fittings and whether the furniture is ready-made or bespoke.

When planning a similar makeover, it is worth dividing the budget into:

- **Design:** the interior concept and the necessary construction documentation.

- **Furniture:** the wardrobe, desk, drawers, shelving and internal fittings.

- **Sleeping area:** the bed, mattress, bedding storage and upholstered elements.

- **Materials:** wall preparation and finishes, along with materials needed for installation.

- **Furnishings and accessories:** the chair, light fittings, curtains, rug and organisers.

- **Labour and logistics:** painting, delivery, carrying items into the room and assembly.

- **Contingency:** a separate allowance for unexpected adjustments and small purchases that arise during the work.

In this case, retaining the electrical installation limits the planned scope of work, but it does not replace a quotation for furniture and installation. Before making purchases, it is worth setting an overall spending limit and comparing solutions within it. ## Frequently asked questions about this design

## Can a bed, a desk and plenty of storage fit into 9 m²?

In this design, we combined these functions by concentrating tall cabinetry around the study area and using the space above the bed. Whether a similar layout will work in another room depends on the wall dimensions, the positions of the window and door, and the clearance needed to open the furniture.

## Can a pink bedroom also suit an older girl?

Yes, provided she likes the shade. Here, we combined pink with cream and wood-effect finishes, keeping the more childlike motifs mainly in the accessories. As a result, changing the decorations can significantly alter the overall feel of the interior.

## Does the design include a window seat?

No. A window seat was part of the family’s wish list, but it is not included in the visualisations shown. An upholstered bed sits near the window and can also be used for daytime relaxation.

## Is the furniture shown from Meblik or VOX collections?

The parents mentioned these brands as examples of options they were considering. However, we do not attribute the furnishings shown in the visualisations to a specific collection. Product selection and the construction of the cabinetry should be confirmed in the design specification.

## Can a similar room be furnished without relocating electrical points?

It is possible if the planned furniture and lighting layout works with the existing installation. In this design, retaining the electrical points was one of the family’s requirements and needs to be taken into account when preparing the details for implementation.

## Plan a bedroom tailored to your child

This design began with specific needs: a favourite shade of pink, drawers for treasures, a study space and a cosy bed. Within 9 m², each of these functions had to be considered alongside the others so that the furniture would form a cohesive whole.
