How can you combine space for studying, sleeping and storage in a boy’s room measuring 9 m²? In our design for 10-year-old Janek from Warsaw, we placed an upholstered bed along the wall, a corner desk by the window and a tall wardrobe on the other side of the room. Light-coloured cabinet fronts, wood-effect finishes and shades of grey create a calm base, while blue accent lighting and controller artwork give the interior a gaming feel. The images show visualisations of the design created by Fabryka Projektów.

## How did we arrange the different functions within 9 m²?

The relationship between the furniture pieces was the key consideration. The bed occupies one side of the room, while the study area sits by the window. The desktop extends along the adjoining wall, making use of the corner. Storage is distributed between a tall wardrobe, drawers, a wall cabinet and an open shelf.

In such a small room, it is essential to check not only the furniture footprints but also the space needed to pull out the chair, open cabinet doors and extend drawers. The visualisation illustrates the concept; actual clearances should be verified on the floor plan and during measurements before ordering furniture.

We explain the broader principles of planning functional zones in our guide to [designing a child’s room step by step](https://f-projektow.pl/en/jak-urzadzic-pokoj-dziecka-kompletny-poradnik-krok-po-kroku.htm). Here, we show how these principles apply to Janek’s individual room.

## A corner desk by the window: space for a computer and studying

We designed a desktop along the window with room for a monitor, keyboard and notebooks. Its side extension provides additional space for accessories. White drawers beneath the desktop keep school supplies tucked away, while a closed cabinet above the side section adds further storage.

The position by the window provides access to daylight, while the blinds allow it to be reduced when it interferes with screen use. Cable routing and access to power sockets also need to be planned before implementation. The chair should suit the child’s height and the desktop height — a gaming appearance alone does not guarantee comfort.

## An upholstered bed and a shelf above the relaxation area

We placed a grey bed with an upholstered backrest along the wall. Cushions and soft finishes give this part of the room a cosy feel. A small side table sits beside it, with an open shelf above the bed for books, models and decorations.

We did not add a separate lounge chair, which would take up more floor space. The bed area brings relaxation together in one place. Before purchasing, it is worth checking the full dimensions of the bed frame rather than just the size of the sleeping surface.

## Storage: a tall wardrobe, drawers and a place for a backpack

A tall wardrobe with light-coloured fronts keeps clothing organised. Its simple form complements the white desk elements and wall cabinet. We reserved the open shelves for selected items, while closed storage helps reduce the number of belongings left on display.

A wall-mounted coat rack beside the wardrobe provides a place for a backpack, sweatshirt and caps. It uses a section of wall without occupying floor space like a freestanding rack. Its height and fixing method should suit the user and the wall material.

## A gaming feel created through lighting and accessories

The gaming theme appears in the controller artwork, chair and rug pattern. Blue lines of light highlight the edges of the walls and ceiling. Light-coloured surfaces, grey upholstery and repeated wood-effect finishes balance the overall look.

The lighting serves several purposes: track lights illuminate the room, the desk lamp provides task lighting, and LED accent lighting creates atmosphere. Decorative blue light does not replace suitable lighting for homework. Separate controls are worth including so that the accent lighting can be switched off during study time and before bed.

## How can you plan a budget for furnishing a similar room?

The cost of furnishing a 9 m² room depends on the scope of work, the products selected and how the furniture is made. Floor area alone is not enough to produce an estimate. We do not provide a cost breakdown for Janek’s room because we do not have confirmed implementation prices.

Before making purchases, it is useful to separate the following expenses:

- **Design:** the price of the selected package and the required scope of documentation.

- **Furniture and equipment:** a bed with a mattress, desk, chair, wardrobe and other storage; computer equipment, if it is also being purchased.

- **Materials and finishes:** wall preparation and painting, and any work on flooring and skirting boards.

- **Lighting:** light fittings, a desk lamp and a complete LED system, including components and controls.

- **Labour and delivery:** renovation work, agreed changes to electrical or other building services, transport, carrying items into the room and installation.

- **Contingency:** a separate amount for expenses that cannot yet be confirmed precisely.

First, obtain prices for the essentials needed for sleeping, studying and storage. Then allocate funds to decorations and more elaborate accent lighting. Adjust the contingency to the room’s condition and the uncertainty of the quotations; do not treat it from the outset as money for more expensive accessories. Also check whether delivery and installation are already included in the furniture prices to avoid counting them twice.

The furniture selection may include ready-made, modular or custom-made pieces. We do not determine how Janek’s furniture will be made from the visualisations alone. When comparing quotations, our guide to [custom-made or ready-made furniture — assessing suitability and total cost](https://f-projektow.pl/en/meble-na-wymiar-czy-gotowe-projekt-mieszkania-i-budzet.htm) can help.

## What should you check before implementing a 9 m² room design?

- Accurate dimensions of the room, window, door and building services.

- The full dimensions of the bed and access to the wardrobe and drawers.

- Space to pull out the chair and move past the desk.

- Whether the window can be opened and the blinds operated with the monitor in place.

- Whether the desktop and chair suit the child’s height.

- How the cabinets, shelves and wall rack will be secured.

- Cable routing, lighting controls and access to LED system components.

- Whether the quotations are complete and how much remains in the contingency fund.

## Frequently asked questions about a small room for a 10-year-old

## Can a bed, desk and wardrobe fit into 9 m²?

Yes, provided the room’s shape and the positions of doors and windows allow a suitable layout. In Janek’s design, we used the walls and the corner by the window. Any other room requires its dimensions and the space needed to use the furniture to be checked individually.

## Does a corner desk always work in a small room?

Not always. In Janek’s room, it makes use of two adjoining walls. In another interior, a straight desktop may leave more space for a walkway or bed. The choice should follow from the floor plan and the child’s needs.

## How can you create a gaming atmosphere without replacing all the furniture?

You can use artwork, textiles and decorative lighting while keeping a calm furniture base. In Janek’s design, the controller motif and blue accent lighting give the light-coloured interior its character.

## How much does a design for this type of room cost?

The price depends on the selected package and the scope of the design work. You can find the current options on our [children’s room design service page](https://f-projektow.pl/en/26-projekt-pokoju-dzieciecego-projekt-dla-dziecka.html). The design service and the implementation of the interior are separate budget items.

## Plan a room tailored to your child

Janek’s design combines a corner study workstation, an upholstered bed and storage within 9 m². Achieving a similar result requires adapting the layout to the individual room and taking the child’s needs and available budget into account.
