The room designed for 10-year-old Adam from Warsaw needed to meet his needs today while remaining practical in the years ahead. We combined spaces for studying, resting and storage. Calm colours, warm wood tones and simple forms create a base that Adam can adapt as his interests change. The images show visualisations of the design.

## How did we plan Adam’s room?

The key decision was to give each function a clear place within the room. We positioned the upholstered bed along one wall and the study area by the window. Wardrobes, drawers and shelves were grouped around the desk. This creates a cohesive arrangement and keeps the route through the room clear.

The layout supports Adam’s everyday needs: books and school supplies are close to the desk, clothes can be stored behind closed cabinet doors, and the bed forms a separate place to rest. The views from the doorway show the arrangement particularly well.

## A desk by the window with storage close at hand

We placed the study area by the window. The desktop, drawers, shelves and closed cabinets provide space for homework and hobbies. Open shelves display selected belongings, while closed cabinets keep other items out of sight.

Lighting was also an important part of the design. In addition to the ceiling fixtures, there is light at the desk and illumination on selected shelves. Each source serves a purpose: lighting the work surface, making the room easier to use in the evening or highlighting the cabinetry.

## A room for today and the future: why choose a calm base?

Interests can change quickly at the age of 10. That is why the room does not rely on a single child-themed motif. Light cabinet fronts, wood, grey tones and black details provide a backdrop for books, decorations and whatever matters to Adam at a given time.

As he grows older, the room’s appearance can be refreshed by changing the accessories and how the open shelves are used. The basic division into areas for work, sleep and storage will remain useful. This does not mean the room will never need changes; it means its main functions were planned for more than Adam’s current age.

## A restful space without too many decorations

The softly upholstered bed sits against the wall. Shelves are positioned above it, with an additional light nearby. This arrangement gives Adam a place to rest and read while maintaining a clear distinction between the bed and the desk.

It is easy to fill every available surface in a child’s room. Here, a limited number of decorations keeps the interior calm and leaves room for things Adam may choose for himself in the future.

## What should you check before furnishing a similar room?

Adam’s room shows that comfort depends largely on how its functions are arranged. Before choosing furniture, check the room’s actual dimensions, how the doors and wardrobes open, the space needed to pull out the chair, and access to the radiator and window. Power outlets and lighting should also be planned around the positions of the desk and bed.

## Adam’s room design: a summary

In Adam’s Warsaw room, we combined a desk by the window, a comfortable bed and cabinetry with space for clothes, books and smaller belongings. The calm colour scheme allows the accessories to change as he grows, while the layout supports everyday use right now.

## Frequently asked questions

## How can you design a 10-year-old’s room to remain useful for years?

Start with a comfortable arrangement of the study, sleeping and storage areas. Long-lasting elements can have calm colours and simple forms, while the child’s current interests can be reflected in accessories that are easier to change.

## Where should you place a desk in a child’s room?

Choose a position that makes good use of daylight and leaves enough space to pull out the chair. In Adam’s design, the desk is by the window. The final position should always take into account the room’s dimensions, window, radiator and the child’s needs.

## How can you combine open shelves with closed storage?

Open shelves can hold books and selected decorations, while clothes and less frequently used items can be kept behind cabinet doors. This makes it easier to maintain order while leaving space for the belongings that give the room its personal character.
