Elis is 10 and Maja is 5. One child already attends school, while the other is still at preschool. The family lives in Czechia and wanted to prepare their shared bedroom for the next stage: two children studying every day. Within **15 m², we designed two study spaces, two separate beds and storage** that accommodates school supplies alongside toys and personal belongings.

The visualisations present an interior concept in which a shared, light-coloured base brings the space together, while different decorations give each side of the room its own character.

## How can you prepare a 15 m² bedroom for two schoolchildren?

**Start by giving each child their own place to work, sleep and store belongings, then check the walkways and whether both children can use the furniture at the same time.** In Elis and Maja’s room, the study area was designed for two children from the outset. This means there will be no need to find room for a second desk when the younger child starts school.

- Room size: 15 m².

- Users: Elis, aged 10, and Maja, aged 5.

- Location: Czechia.

- Main brief: a shared interior ready for two children to study.

- Key features: two desks, separate beds with drawers, tall fitted storage, shelves and a curtain.

## Two different stages of childhood in one room

A ten-year-old needs space for exercise books, reading materials and personal interests. A five-year-old still makes extensive use of the play area, but also benefits from a surface for drawing and arts and crafts. A shared bedroom design should accommodate both daily routines.

The parents explained that, in their situation, starting school at the age of six means the younger child’s needs will soon change. That is why the brief called for two study spaces right away. This is a decision about the room’s layout, rather than a reason to give the whole space a classroom feel.

## Two study spaces instead of one shared desk

The visualisations show two separate desktops, individual lamps, pegboards and shelves above each workstation. Each child has space for stationery and the books they are currently using. One can leave an exercise book open while the other works on a drawing.

The study spaces have different accessories and chairs, but share light-coloured desktops and white storage. This arrangement allows for individuality without introducing two unrelated sets of furniture into a compact room.

We explore other ways to organise this part of the room in our article [on study areas in children’s bedrooms](https://f-projektow.pl/pl/strefa-nauki-w-pokoju-dziecka-10-sprawdzonych-inspiracji-z-projektow.htm).

## A place for a future schoolchild, starting at preschool age

The younger child’s desk can initially be used for colouring, puzzles and simple craft activities. Its contents will change later, with exercise books, textbooks and a timetable taking their place. It therefore makes sense to include drawers and organisers that can be repurposed for different belongings over time.

When choosing the actual furniture, the desktop height and seat adjustment should suit the child’s height. A chair’s appearance in a visualisation does not determine how comfortable it will be: foot support, suitable seat depth and enough room to work at the desk are all needed.

## A desk by the window and space for personal interests

The second study space is beside the window. Wooden blinds help regulate incoming daylight, while a desk lamp provides additional task lighting. Above the desk, the design includes books, figurines and artwork with a more grown-up feel.

When planning a similar workstation, check access to the window, space to pull out the chair and potential reflections on a screen. We cover these details in our guide to [planning a desk, chair and lighting for studying](https://f-projektow.pl/pl/ergonomiczne-stanowisko-do-nauki-w-pokoju-nastolatka-jak-zaplanowac-biurko-krzeslo-i-oswietlenie.htm).

## Two beds with drawers – sleeping and storage within the same footprint

In this project, we used two separate beds on opposite sides of the room. Drawers sit beneath the mattresses, with open storage for books and small belongings at the ends of the beds. The floor space occupied by each bed therefore also provides storage.

This solution requires enough clearance to pull the drawers out. During planning, it is not enough to check whether the bed itself fits against the wall: you also need to make sure an open drawer will not block the walkway and that the child can reach it comfortably.

A smaller room may need a different approach. For comparison, see our [10 m² shared bedroom design with a loft sleeping platform](https://f-projektow.pl/pl/maly-pokoj-10-m2-dla-rodzenstwa.htm), where we made different use of the room’s height.

## A curtain between the two areas – privacy when needed

A curtain on a ceiling track provides a flexible division within the shared space. When drawn back, it keeps the room open; when closed, it gives the children visual privacy. With an age gap, this option can be useful during rest time or when one child wants to spend a little time in their own part of the room.

**A curtain does not replace a wall or provide sound insulation.** A shared bedroom still requires agreed times for quiet play and studying. Its positioning should also preserve access to walkways, wardrobes and natural light.

## Storage: tall fitted units, drawers and shelves

Light-coloured fronts and long handles create a calm backdrop for the more colourful accessories. The fitted units make use of the wall’s height, while closed cupboards conceal items that do not need to remain on display. Open shelves above the desks provide space for books and selected decorations.

When organising the wardrobes, it is worth allocating separate sections to Elis and Maja. Everyday items should be easy to reach, while upper compartments can hold seasonal belongings handled by adults. As school starts, some of the space used for toys will gradually be taken over by school supplies.

## Colours and interests: a shared base with different accessories

White, warm wood tones and a light-coloured floor connect the two sides of the room. Against this backdrop, pink textiles and a cartoon decoration appear beside one bed, while stronger green accents, figurines and artwork feature near the other workstation. The room retains its child-friendly character while also accommodating more mature themes.

There is no need to agree on identical accessories for both children. A better approach is to choose a shared furniture palette while allowing freedom with bedding, posters and smaller decorations. As interests change, these elements can be updated instead of replacing all the fitted furniture.

## Lighting for studying and calmer evenings

The design combines ceiling spotlights, linear lighting near the ceiling, illuminated shelves and desk lamps. Each layer serves a different purpose: lighting the room, adding light around the fitted units or illuminating a specific desktop.

Independent use of lamps is particularly helpful in a shared bedroom. However, it is important to check that the light from one workstation does not disturb a child lying in bed. The final choice of fittings and controls should follow the design documentation and the room’s actual conditions.

## How should you budget for furnishing a room for two children?

**The budget should cover the design, furniture and equipment for two children, materials, labour, delivery and installation, plus a separate contingency for unexpected expenses.** We do not provide an implementation cost for Elis and Maja’s room because we do not have a final breakdown of purchases and work. A floor area of 15 m² alone is not enough to price this type of interior reliably.

- **Design:** check the scope of the chosen package, particularly furniture and lighting documentation.

- **Furniture and equipment:** include two beds with mattresses, two workstations, chairs, wardrobes and organisers.

- **Materials:** allow for wall finishes, wall decorations, wood-effect elements, the curtain, its track and window coverings.

- **Labour:** obtain quotes for finishing work, any electrical alterations and fitted furniture installation.

- **Transport and installation:** include delivery to Czechia, carrying items into the property and local contractors’ services.

- **Contingency:** set aside funds for costs identified after measurements are taken and implementation details are agreed.

It is worth securing funds for beds, comfortable study spaces and essential storage first. Decorations can be added later. Adjust the contingency to the scope of work and the certainty of the quotes; do not treat the entire available sum as a budget for furniture alone.

When carrying out a project abroad, compare final prices in a single currency and check the availability of specific products. An alternative item should match the required dimensions and installation method, not just the appearance. If the bedroom is part of a larger renovation, a [design for the whole apartment](https://f-projektow.pl/pl/27-58-projekt-mieszkania-projektowanie-mieszkania.html) allows you to plan the needs of every room together and prioritise spending.

## A room ready for school – what should you check before buying?

Elis and Maja’s project shows how to prepare a shared space for a new stage of education. Functionality also depends on matching the furniture precisely to the room and the children. Before ordering, check:

- Can both children sit at their desks at the same time?

- Is there room at each workstation for stationery and an open exercise book?

- Can the chairs be adjusted to suit the children’s heights?

- Can the bed drawers and wardrobe doors open freely?

- Does the curtain leave walkways and access to the window clear?

- Does each child have their own storage section?

- Is there space left for everyday play once the furniture is in place?

- Do the quotes include delivery, installation and the necessary work?

## FAQ – a 15 m² room for children aged 5 and 10

## Can two beds and two desks fit in a 15 m² room?

Yes, as this project demonstrates. Whether a similar layout will work also depends on the room’s proportions, the positions of the window and door, and the furniture dimensions. Floor area alone does not guarantee the same result in every room.

## Is it worth adding a second desk while the younger child is still at preschool?

Yes, if they will soon need their own study space and the room’s layout allows it. Before then, the workstation can be used for drawing and tabletop activities. The furniture should suit the child’s current height.

## How can you accommodate different interests in a shared bedroom?

Use a consistent colour palette for larger furniture and let each child choose accessories for their own area. In Elis and Maja’s room, different decorations and textiles sit against a shared backdrop of white and wood.

## Will a curtain provide quiet for studying?

It will not provide sound insulation. It helps reduce visual distractions and temporarily screen off part of the room, but shared rules for using the space are still needed.

## How much does a design for this type of room cost?

Check the current service price for your chosen package. This is separate from the cost of furniture, materials, transport and carrying out the work. We do not present the implementation costs of this particular project as known figures.

## Can you order a bedroom design for children living in Czechia?

Online collaboration allows a design to be developed using the measurements, photographs and requirements you provide. For a project in Czechia, you will also need to agree on furniture availability, deliveries and the documentation required by local contractors.
