**Can a 10.30 m² room for a 13-year-old accommodate studying, gaming, sleeping and storage without replacing all the furniture?** For this project, we started with pieces that were already in the room: a bed and a ceiling-height bookcase. Both were repainted, while the remaining furniture was selected from ready-made options available in shops. We brought everything together with a charcoal colour scheme, blue lighting and a distinctive gaming theme.

The visualisations show the design concept for a small teenager’s bedroom. The key decision was to match the new furnishings to the retained pieces and the teenager’s everyday needs.

## The design brief: a small room and making use of what is already there

We created this design for a 13-year-old boy. The 10.30 m² space needed to accommodate several functions while incorporating the existing furniture. The retained bed and tall bookcase became the foundation of the new arrangement.

- **Occupant:** a 13-year-old boy.

- **Floor area:** 10.30 m².

- **Reused furniture:** the bed and ceiling-height bookcase, both repainted.

- **Other furniture:** ready-made pieces available in shops.

- **Room functions:** studying, using a computer, relaxing and storage.

- **Design character:** charcoal, shades of grey, blue accents and a gaming theme.

This example shows why it is worth assessing existing furniture before shopping. If the pieces fit, are sturdy and still meet the occupant’s needs, they can be incorporated into a new design. A change of colour helps bring together pieces from different collections.

## How did we plan the layout of this 10.30 m² teenager’s room?

The bed sits along one wall, with the computer desk against the opposite wall, close to the window. This gives the sleeping and study areas their own clearly defined places. The tall bookcase, wardrobe, wall cabinets and low sideboard shown in the visualisations provide additional storage.

With this layout, it is also important to allow enough space to pull out the chair, open cabinet doors and use the drawers under the bed. Simply fitting the furniture onto a floor plan is not enough: every piece must remain accessible in everyday use.

We discuss the broader principles of planning small interiors in our guide to [designing an 8–10 m² teenager’s room](https://f-projektow.pl/en/pokoj-mlodziezowy-810-m-jak-zaplanowac-maly-metraz-bez-kompromisow.htm). Here, we show how they apply to a project that retains existing furniture.

## A repainted bed – an existing piece in a new design

The bed was already in the room. It was repainted and incorporated into the new, darker colour palette. In the visualisation, its frame coordinates with the charcoal cabinet fronts, while grey bedding and cushions soften the overall look. The drawers visible beneath the bed provide additional storage without adding another piece of furniture.

This approach also matters when planning spending: instead of automatically adding a new bed to the shopping list, you can compare the cost of refurbishment with the cost of replacement. Before painting, however, you need to check the material, the condition of the surface and the requirements of the chosen paint system. Colour alone will not fix worn joints or unsuitable dimensions.

## A ceiling-height bookcase and ready-made furniture – how can they work together?

The second retained piece is the ceiling-height bookcase. This was also repainted. In the visualisation, the open shelves hold books, while the lower section has cupboard doors. The height of the piece makes use of the wall, which is particularly valuable in a small room.

The remaining furniture consists of ready-made, shop-bought pieces. Their cohesive appearance comes from the choice of colours, proportions and placement. The cabinets above the bed and the adjacent wardrobe form an orderly arrangement, but that does not mean they were custom-made.

When buying a similar set, check the full cabinet dimensions, the direction in which the doors open and the fixing method. Cabinets above a sleeping area must be installed according to the manufacturer’s instructions, taking the wall construction into account. There should also be comfortable headroom for someone sitting on the bed.

## A desk for studying and gaming in a small room

The workstation beside the window combines space for a computer with a desktop for exercise books and school supplies. The visualisation shows two monitors on mounts above the desktop, a chair with armrests and a computer beneath the desk. This setup requires advance planning for equipment, cables and a clear writing surface.

Comfort depends on matching the desk and chair to the user’s height. When choosing a chair, check its adjustment range, back support and whether it can slide under the desk. Gaming styling is an addition to these features. The workstation should also leave enough legroom and access to the computer.

Being close to the window provides access to daylight. However, the position of the screens and window coverings needs to be adjusted to reduce reflections. A separate task light at the desk is also needed for homework.

## Charcoal and blue lighting – a gaming atmosphere in 10.30 m²

The most distinctive feature is the wall with its neon-style controller motif. Blue accent lighting, dark furniture and black ceiling light fittings complement it. A light-coloured ceiling, sheer curtains and wood-effect flooring balance the darker parts of the design.

The visualisations show lighting in several locations: around the ceiling, in the bookcase, beneath the cabinets and at the workstation. This helps define the different areas visually. Coloured lighting is mainly decorative; studying requires light that makes text easy to read and supports comfortable working. It is worth planning separate controls for functional and decorative lighting.

## How should you budget for a similar teenager’s room?

**The best way to set a budget is to use the scope of the changes and a specific shopping list, rather than floor area alone.** Two pieces of furniture were retained in this project, so the spending plan should separate their refurbishment from purchases of new furniture. We do not give a total price for the design shown here because we are not publishing its cost estimate or a breakdown of the completed work.

When preparing your own breakdown, include:

- **Design:** the fee for the chosen scope of design work, separate from the cost of fitting out the room.

- **Furniture refurbishment:** surface preparation for the bed and bookcase, painting materials and any labour costs.

- **New furniture:** a desk, chair, wardrobe, sideboard and cabinets, depending on the agreed shopping list.

- **Finishing materials:** paint, wall decoration and other items required by the actual scope of work.

- **Lighting and electrical work:** light fittings, accent lighting components, power supplies, controls and any electrical alterations.

- **Additional furnishings and equipment:** textiles, window coverings, organisers and computer equipment, if these also need to be purchased.

- **Labour and logistics:** assembly, transport, carrying items into the property and preparing the room for the work.

- **Contingency:** a separate amount for unexpected repairs and changes, set after assessing the room’s condition.

There is no need to divide the total into fixed percentages that are identical for every room. Price the essentials for comfortable everyday use first, then the extras. Do not treat the contingency as money already allocated to decoration. Keeping the bed and bookcase reduces the list of new purchases, but the actual saving can only be established by comparing refurbishment costs with the price of equivalent replacements.

Compare the design fee with what the chosen package includes and the extent of the documentation needed to put the design into practice.

## What does this project show about furnishing small interiors?

The main aim was to combine the existing bed and bookcase with new furniture so that no piece looked out of place. A shared colour brought the furnishings together, while the gaming theme gave the room a character suited to its teenage occupant. The project also shows that ready-made furniture can form a cohesive arrangement when selected for a specific space.

This sequence of decisions is also useful when furnishing an entire apartment: first consider needs and layout, then furniture, materials and details. You can read more in our article explaining [why it is worth starting with a functional layout](https://f-projektow.pl/en/uklad-funkcjonalny-mieszkania-co-to-jest-i-dlaczego-warto-zaczac-wlasnie-od-niego.htm). If the changes cover several rooms, planning them together as part of an [apartment interior design project](https://f-projektow.pl/pl/27-58-projekt-mieszkania-projektowanie-mieszkania.html) allows you to take their relationships into account, along with the overall budget for purchases and work.

## Frequently asked questions about this room design for a 13-year-old

## Is all the furniture in this room new?

No. The bed and ceiling-height bookcase were already in the room and were repainted. The remaining furniture was selected from ready-made, shop-bought products.

## Does a 10.30 m² room require custom-made furniture?

Not necessarily. This design uses existing furniture and ready-made pieces. Whether a similar approach will work depends on the wall dimensions, the positions of the door and window, and the occupant’s needs.

## How can one desk accommodate both studying and gaming?

Plan the equipment so that there is clear desktop space for books and exercise books, choose an adjustable chair and provide task lighting. It is also worth organising cables and checking how much space is needed to pull the chair out.

## Is repainting furniture always cheaper than replacing it?

Not always. You need to account for the condition of the furniture, surface preparation, materials and any labour costs. Compare refurbishment with the price of new furniture of suitable dimensions and function.

## How much does it cost to furnish a room like this?

It cannot be priced reliably from visualisations alone. A product list and scope of work are needed. The design fee, furniture refurbishment, purchases, materials, labour and contingency should each be calculated separately.

## Plan a teenager’s room around your existing furniture

Would you like to turn a child’s bedroom into a teenage space while keeping some of the furniture? Prepare room measurements, photographs and the dimensions of the pieces you want to retain. Set a budget and describe the teenager’s needs: study space, computer equipment, books and belongings that need storage.

[Explore our teenager’s room design service](https://f-projektow.pl/en/25-projekt-pokoju-mlodziezowego-projektowanie-pokoju.html) and choose a scope that suits your planned changes. What you already own can be the starting point.
