Can a **living room with kitchenette of approximately 20 m²** accommodate a comfortable kitchen, a dining table for several people, a sofa, a TV area and plenty of storage while still looking spacious and elegant? The design created for **Ms Agnieszka from Warsaw** proves that it certainly can.

This open-plan living area measures exactly **20.27 m²**. The main challenge was therefore to make the best possible use of the available space while keeping the interior visually light and providing all the functions needed for everyday life.

The resulting interior is based on **white, black, light wood and a subtle stone pattern**, complemented by large windows, mirrors, decorative lighting and greenery.

## How to arrange a small 20 m² living room with kitchenette?

When designing a small open-plan living area, simply choosing attractive furniture is not enough. The most important element is a well-planned **functional layout**.

Within 20.27 m², we had to create space for several different functions: cooking, storage, dining, relaxing and watching television.

In the design for Ms Agnieszka, each of these zones is clearly defined, while at the same time all of them form one cohesive interior.

The kitchen is located at the back of the room, the dining table occupies the central area, while the relaxation zone with a sofa and coffee tables is positioned closer to the large windows.

As a result, the interior does not feel randomly furnished despite its relatively small size.

## White kitchen with a black worktop – a way to create a visually light interior

In a small living room with kitchenette, the appearance of the kitchen itself is very important. Heavy or overly contrasting cabinetry could visually dominate the entire living space.

That is why we used **smooth, light-coloured handleless fronts**. The cabinetry extends upwards, allowing the available storage space to be used as efficiently as possible.

The black worktop and black fittings provide contrast.

The wall above the worktop has been finished with a material resembling light stone with subtle veining. The same motif appears in other parts of the interior, making the kitchen look more elegant while keeping it visually connected with the rest of the design.

Under-cabinet lighting additionally highlights the texture of the wall finish and provides practical illumination when preparing meals.

## An open kitchen that is visually separated from the living room

One of the most interesting elements of this design is the use of **vertical black slats** between the kitchen and dining area.

They do not close off the space like a traditional wall, but they subtly define the boundaries between the different functional zones.

This solution works particularly well in small living rooms with kitchenettes, where completely separating the kitchen could make both spaces feel much smaller.

The black slats also correspond with the legs of the table and chairs, lighting fixtures, mirror frames and elements of the TV unit.

## The dining table as the centre of a small living room with kitchen

Despite the area being only slightly over 20 m², the design includes a **full-size dining table with comfortable chairs**.

This is particularly important because in many small apartments the dining area is reduced to a small countertop or breakfast bar.

Here, the table becomes the natural centre of the interior and can be used both for everyday meals and for gatherings with family or friends.

Above the table is a distinctive pendant lamp with frosted glass globes and a black frame. The same form is repeated in the relaxation area, helping the lighting design visually connect the different parts of the room.

## A large mirror visually enlarges the living room with kitchenette

One of the most important design solutions used in this interior is the **large mirror positioned on the wall next to the dining table**.

In a small interior, a mirror can significantly change the perception of space. It reflects the natural light entering through the large windows and mirrors part of the living room and kitchen, making the space appear much deeper.

This is a good example of a solution that is both decorative and functional.

The slim black frame of the mirror complements the other black details used throughout the interior.

## Small living room with a large TV feature wall

The TV wall has been designed as one of the main decorative features of the living room.

The television is mounted on a large, light-coloured panel. Below it is a long, low cabinet that provides additional storage space.

Between the TV panel and the lower cabinets, dark vertical detailing and decorative lighting have been used. This gives the simple black-and-white unit more depth and makes it much more visually striking.

A tall glass-fronted display cabinet is positioned to the side. It makes use of the available vertical space without creating the impression of a heavy piece of furniture.

## Relaxation area – comfortable without overwhelming the interior

The relaxation area features a light-coloured sofa positioned opposite the television.

The upholstery colour was chosen so that it would not introduce another strong contrast. Light grey works well with the white cabinetry, curtains and wooden flooring.

In front of the sofa, we placed **two round coffee tables in different sizes**. Their rounded shapes make it easier to move around the limited space and visually soften the many straight lines used throughout the cabinetry.

The dark rug defines the relaxation zone while also referring to the black elements used throughout the interior.

## Light colours and black accents in a modern living room

The interior is based on a light, neutral colour palette. White, very light shades of grey and the natural colour of wood dominate the design.

Black is mainly used to provide contrast.

It appears in the lighting fixtures, worktops, slats, furniture frames, coffee tables, built-in furniture and accessories.

As a result, the interior remains bright without becoming monotonous.

The wooden floor, decorative accessories and plants add warmth to the space, preventing the black-and-white interior from feeling cold.

## Lighting as part of the interior design

In this project, lighting serves more than just a practical purpose.

Several different light sources have been used, including decorative lamps with globe-shaped shades, kitchen lighting, illuminated TV cabinetry and additional accent lighting.

This makes it possible to change the atmosphere of the interior depending on the situation.

During the day, natural light entering through the large windows plays the main role, while in the evening softer decorative lighting can be used to create a more cosy atmosphere.

## How to visually enlarge a living room with kitchenette of around 20 m²?

Several solutions used in this design work particularly well in small interiors:

- light-coloured furniture fronts and walls,

- consistent flooring throughout the entire space,

- built-in furniture that makes use of the full height of the room,

- a large mirror that visually enlarges the interior,

- visually lightweight chairs and coffee tables,

- a limited colour palette,

- vertical slats instead of a full partition wall,

- several types of lighting,

- plenty of closed storage space,

- repeating materials and colours throughout the interior.

Thanks to these solutions, even a relatively small space can feel organised, functional and visually much larger.

## A hallway stylistically connected with the living area

The design does not visually end at the boundary of the living room. Elements used in the main living area are also repeated in the adjacent hallway.

Light-coloured floor-to-ceiling cabinetry provides plenty of storage, while black details, vertical slats and a large mirror create a stylistic connection between the entrance area and the living room.

The built-in furniture also includes a practical area for shoes, coat hooks and a small seat.

## A functional small living room with kitchenette – good design is the key

With an area of around 20 m², every part of the room matters.

A sofa that is too large may make it difficult to move around. An oversized dining table can restrict circulation between the kitchen and living room, while overly heavy cabinetry may visually reduce the size of the entire interior.

That is why a **small living room with kitchenette design** should begin with careful functional planning, followed by the selection of colours, materials and individual pieces of furniture.

The design for Ms Agnieszka shows that a **20.27 m² living room with kitchenette can function simultaneously as a kitchen, dining area and comfortable living room** without sacrificing an elegant appearance or adequate storage space.
