How do you design a room for a 17-year-old so that it no longer feels like a child’s bedroom, while remaining functional, comfortable and tailored to a teenager’s interests? This was exactly the challenge we faced when creating a teenage room design for Marcin from Poznań.

The result is a modern interior based on a combination of white, black and deep navy blue. The owner’s interests – gaming, basketball, sports and collecting sneakers – became an important part of the arrangement. At the same time, we included all the functions a 17-year-old needs: a comfortable study area, a computer workstation, plenty of storage, a bed, TV, game console and space for relaxation.

This is an example of a teenage room that can work well not only today, but also for many years to come.

## A Room for a 17-Year-Old – No Longer Childish, but Still Multifunctional

Designing a teenage room is different from arranging a typical child’s bedroom. In the case of a 17-year-old, the interior should be much more timeless.

Instead of using numerous childlike decorations, we focused on creating a strong character through colour, lighting and a few distinctive elements connected with Marcin’s interests.

The base consists of white furniture and light flooring. Contrast is provided by black furnishings, black blinds, dark frames around the glass display cabinets and a strong navy blue feature wall behind the bed.

This combination makes the interior look modern and youthful, while avoiding a design that the owner will quickly outgrow.

## Navy Blue Wall as the Main Interior Feature

One of the most distinctive elements of the design is the deep navy blue wall next to the bed.

This is where the sports accents appear, including a display for medals and basketballs. As a result, the teenager’s interests become an integral part of the interior rather than looking like randomly added decorations.

Vertical LED light strips were also incorporated into the wall. Combined with the lighting running along the ceiling, they create a modern effect, especially in the evening.

Navy blue works well with the black bed and gaming chair as well as the white furniture. At the same time, it makes the relaxation area feel visually warmer and more inviting.

## Sleeping Area with Space for Books and Personal Items

The bed was positioned against the navy blue wall. Its dark upholstered frame and headboard coordinate with the other black elements in the room.

A small wall-mounted bedside cabinet was placed next to the bed, leaving more of the floor visible and making the arrangement feel lighter.

Above the bed, we designed an extensive shelving unit for books, figurines, collections and decorations. Its irregular shape is one of the elements that gives the interior an individual character.

Integrated LED lighting underneath the shelves further emphasises their shape.

## A Teenage Room Inspired by a Passion for Basketball

We did not want to create an interior where the teenager’s passion for basketball was limited to a single poster on the wall.

Sports-inspired details were incorporated into several parts of the room. On the navy blue wall, we planned holders for displaying basketballs as well as dedicated space for medals and sporting achievements.

Another distinctive feature is the silhouette of a basketball player applied to the fronts of the large wardrobe.

The motif has a strong visual impact, but its monochromatic black form keeps it consistent with the minimalist style of the interior.

As a result, the room genuinely reflects the personality and interests of its owner.

## Large Desk for Studying and Gaming

In a 17-year-old’s room, the desk is one of the most important pieces of furniture. It needs to provide enough space both for studying and for using a computer.

In Marcin’s room, we made use of the space beneath the large window. A long worktop provides plenty of room for a monitor, computer, books and other accessories.

Underneath the desk there are drawers as well as dedicated space for the computer tower.

One major advantage of this solution is access to natural daylight. During the day, the study area can benefit from the light entering through the window, while artificial lighting provides additional illumination after dark.

The design also presents different finish options for the desk area, including versions with a light and a dark worktop. This makes it possible to compare solutions before implementation and decide which option works best with the overall interior.

## A Gaming Room That Still Looks Elegant

Gaming was an important part of this project, but we also wanted to maintain an elegant character throughout the room.

Instead of using large amounts of colourful RGB lighting, the interior is based primarily on white, black and navy blue. The gaming character is created mainly by the computer, comfortable gaming chair, monitor, TV and console area.

As a result, the computer workstation can be used both for gaming and for homework or studying.

This is particularly practical in a room for an older teenager, as the entire interior is not designed around just one function.

## TV and Game Console as a Separate Entertainment Area

In addition to the computer workstation, the room also includes space for a TV and game console.

A low cabinet was designed below the television, providing a dedicated place for the console and controllers. This keeps the equipment organised and makes it easier to manage cables and accessories.

As a result, one room accommodates a computer workstation, a study area and a separate space for console gaming.

## Display Cabinet for Sneakers and Collections

One of the most distinctive elements of the project is the tall glass-fronted display cabinetry.

It was designed as a place to showcase a sneaker collection. Black frames and tinted glass give the cabinets a more elegant appearance and make them look almost like a private collector’s display.

This solution shows that storage in a teenager’s room does not always have to mean hiding everything behind solid cabinet doors.

If a teenager has a collection of sneakers, LEGO models, figurines, trophies or other items related to a hobby, it is worth planning a suitable display area for them at the design stage.

## Floor-to-Ceiling Wardrobe

A teenager’s room also requires plenty of closed storage space.

For this reason, the project includes a tall built-in wardrobe extending almost to the ceiling. The light-coloured fronts prevent the large piece of furniture from visually overwhelming the room.

Black handles and the basketball player graphic on the wardrobe front reference the other elements of the design.

Floor-to-ceiling cabinetry makes it possible to use the full available height of the room. The upper sections of the wardrobe can be used to store seasonal items or things that are used less frequently.

## LED Lighting Creates the Atmosphere of the Room

In this project, lighting has more than just a practical function.

LED strips were used around the ceiling, beneath the shelves and as vertical decorative light lines on the navy blue wall.

In the evening, they make it possible to create a completely different atmosphere from the one seen during the day.

In addition to decorative lighting, the design also includes ceiling lights and a desk lamp near the computer workstation. Different light sources can therefore be used for different situations: studying, gaming, relaxing or watching a film.

## Black Blinds – A Practical and Decorative Feature

Large windows provide plenty of natural light, but being able to control it is particularly important near a computer workstation.

For this reason, black blinds were used in the project. They coordinate with the gaming chair, display cabinet frames, desk and the other black accents in the room.

They also make it possible to reduce direct sunlight falling onto the computer monitor or television screen.

## How to Design a Functional Room for a 17-Year-Old?

A good teenage room design should begin by identifying all the functions that need to be included in the interior.

For an older teenager, these usually include:

- a comfortable bed,

- a large desk,

- an ergonomic study area,

- a computer workstation,

- a wardrobe and sufficient storage space,

- space for hobbies,

- appropriate lighting,

- a relaxation area,

- and optionally a television and game console.

Only after defining the functional layout is it worth moving on to colours and decorative elements.

Marcin’s room shows that all of these elements can be combined in one cohesive interior without making the space feel overcrowded.

## Marcin’s Room Design – Combining Functionality with Personal Interests

The room designed for 17-year-old Marcin from Poznań shows that a modern teenage interior does not have to rely on randomly selected youthful accessories.

Here, sports, gaming and collecting have been treated as part of the overall concept. The navy blue wall, basketball-inspired details, sneaker display, large computer workstation, game console and extensive built-in furniture create an interior that is highly individual yet organised at the same time.

Most importantly, the room has the potential to remain functional even after Marcin finishes school. Changing just a few accessories will make it possible to transform it into an even more mature interior without carrying out a major renovation.
