Designing a shared room for siblings always requires careful planning. When you need to create a comfortable space for two boys of different ages in just 12 m², every square metre matters. After all, the room needs to function as a bedroom, study area, storage space, play zone and place to relax.

This was exactly the challenge we faced when designing a room for 7-year-old Marcel and 10-year-old Ksawery from Płock.

In this interior, we focused primarily on making maximum use of the room's height. This allowed us to create space for two full-size study areas, a bunk bed, extensive built-in storage, a TV with a games console and an unusual physical activity zone.

The result? A children's room that makes use of practically every available centimetre while remaining modern, cohesive and suitable for both boys.

## How to Design a 12 m² Room for Two Brothers?

When designing a room for two brothers, simply adding two beds and one large desk is not enough. Each child needs their own space for studying, relaxing and storing their belongings.

Marcel and Ksawery are different ages, so we wanted to create an interior that would not feel too childish for the older boy while still remaining attractive and comfortable for the younger one.

The colour palette is based on white, natural wood, graphite and black. Subtle shades of blue and small yellow accents complete the design.

This is a colour scheme that can grow with the boys for years to come. The character of the room can easily be changed later with accessories, posters, decorations or textiles.

## A Bunk Bed Helps Save Valuable Floor Space

One of the most important features of the design is the custom-made structure with two sleeping areas positioned one above the other.

In a small shared bedroom, this solution makes it possible to use the vertical space effectively. Instead of taking up a large part of the floor with two separate beds, we created a compact sleeping zone, leaving the rest of the room available for studying, storage and play.

The lower bed is partially surrounded by soft upholstered wall panels. Similar finishes are also used around the upper sleeping area.

The natural wood construction adds warmth to the interior and works beautifully with the light-coloured fronts of the remaining furniture.

A particularly distinctive element of the upper bed is the safety barrier made from vertically suspended ropes. This keeps the structure visually light and prevents it from becoming a heavy, enclosed feature in the small room.

A black ladder leads to the upper level and matches the other dark details used throughout the interior.

## A Climbing Wall in the Children's Room

A child's room does not have to be used only for sleeping and homework. Marcel and Ksawery's room also includes a dedicated area for physical activity.

Next to the beds, we designed a wooden activity wall with holes and horizontal climbing bars. The activity area has also been extended with additional elements installed near the ceiling.

As a result, the bed structure serves several purposes at the same time and becomes one of the most distinctive features of the entire room.

It is also a good example of how several functions can be combined within a single custom-made structure when designing a small children's room.

When implementing a similar structure, all elements intended for physical activity should be properly designed, securely installed and checked by the contractor to ensure safe use.

## Two Desks – Each Brother Has His Own Study Space

Sharing a bedroom should not mean having to share a single homework station.

That is why the design includes two separate desks. Each boy has his own worktop, chair and space for books, notebooks and school supplies.

The workstations are positioned close to the window, making it possible to take advantage of natural daylight while studying.

Open wooden shelves have been installed above the desks. They provide space not only for books but also for items that are important to the boys, such as models, figurines, collections and favourite constructions.

Spacious drawers have also been designed at each workstation. This means textbooks, notebooks and school accessories do not have to remain on the desk all the time.

## Space for Collections and Children's Interests

Marcel and Ksawery's room also includes plenty of space for items that reflect their interests.

The open shelves display vehicle models, constructions, figurines and books. Some items can be showcased, while others can be stored away inside the closed cabinetry.

In a well-designed child's room, not everything needs to be hidden behind cabinet doors. Personal belongings give the interior character and make it feel like a space that genuinely belongs to its young occupants.

At the same time, the large number of closed cabinets and drawers makes it much easier to keep a room used by two children organised.

## Floor-to-Ceiling Built-In Storage – Plenty of Space for Everything

One of the biggest challenges when designing a shared bedroom is providing enough storage space.

Clothes for two children, seasonal clothing, books, games, toys, electronic equipment and items connected with their hobbies require considerably more storage than in a bedroom designed for one child.

For this reason, a large section of one wall has been used for tall built-in furniture extending all the way to the ceiling.

The smooth, light-coloured fronts ensure that despite its size, the built-in furniture does not overwhelm the room. Upper cabinets can be used for items that are needed less frequently, while the lower sections remain easily accessible for everyday use.

This solution works particularly well in small rooms. Instead of adding several separate chests of drawers, cabinets and shelving units, the storage is concentrated within one organised built-in furniture system.

## Gaming Area with TV and Games Console

Marcel and Ksawery also have their own compact multimedia area.

The TV has been integrated directly into the tall built-in furniture. Below it, we designed an open wood-finished niche for the games console and controllers.

This gives the electronic equipment its own permanent place without requiring additional floor space for a separate TV unit.

The gaming character of the interior is also highlighted by wall art and the rug placed in the central part of the room.

However, the gaming theme has been used as an accent rather than as the dominant concept of the entire design. This means the character of the room can easily be changed as the boys grow older without having to replace the built-in furniture.

## Wood, White and Graphite – A Timeless Base for a Boys' Bedroom

Although the room contains a considerable amount of furniture and equipment, the interior remains visually organised. This is mainly thanks to the limited palette of colours and materials.

The natural wood finish appears on the desk tops, shelves, bed structure, built-in furniture, activity wall and wooden blinds.

It is combined with simple light-coloured furniture fronts and dark graphite used around the study areas and in the sleeping zone.

Black appears in the details, including the chairs, ladder, lighting and structural elements. Blue and yellow accents add a more dynamic and youthful character to the overall design.

## Lighting Designed for Different Functions

Lighting also plays an important role in this project.

The main lighting is provided by minimalist black spotlights mounted on track systems. Their direction can be adjusted to suit different areas of the room.

Additional LED lighting has been incorporated near the ceiling and within the built-in furniture.

Shelf lighting highlights the wooden elements and creates a pleasant atmosphere in the evening. Each study area has also been equipped with its own desk lamp.

By combining several types of lighting, the atmosphere of the room can be adjusted depending on the activity – studying, playing, using the games console or relaxing.

## How to Fit Everything into a 12 m² Room for Two Boys?

Marcel and Ksawery's room shows that even a relatively small bedroom can accommodate a surprisingly extensive range of functions.

Within approximately 12 m², we managed to include:

- two sleeping areas,

- two separate study stations,

- large floor-to-ceiling built-in storage,

- drawers and storage compartments,

- shelves for books and collections,

- a TV,

- space for a games console,

- a gaming area,

- a physical activity and climbing wall,

- comfortable circulation space.

The key was custom-made furniture and the effective use of the room's height. In small interiors, vertical space is often one of the most underused areas.

## A Shared Room Should Give Each Child Their Own Space

When designing a room for siblings, it is very important to find the right balance between shared areas and each child's need for a space of their own.

In this design, the boys share the built-in furniture, activity area and multimedia zone, but at the same time each of them has their own bed, desk and storage space.

This is particularly important when children are different ages. A shared bedroom should be designed so that both children feel that they have their own place within it.

## A Room Design That Can Grow with the Children

Marcel is 7 and Ksawery is 10. Over the next few years, their needs and interests will change significantly.

For this reason, instead of creating a design intended only for young children, we chose a neutral and modern base.

The furniture, desks, beds and built-in storage can remain in place for many years. Over time, changing the decorations, posters, rug or textiles will be enough to give the room a more teenage character.

This is particularly important when using custom-made furniture. A well-designed built-in solution should last much longer than a child's current interests.

## A Small Room for Two Brothers Can Offer a Lot

The 12 m² room designed for Marcel and Ksawery from Płock shows that limited floor space does not have to mean compromising on functionality.

By making use of the room's height, introducing custom-made furniture and carefully dividing the interior into functional zones, we created a space where two boys can sleep, study, store their belongings, develop their interests, play games and stay physically active.

And all of this in just 12 m².

It is in interiors like this that a good design makes the biggest difference. Instead of wondering what needs to be removed from a small room, it is worth looking for ways to make use of every centimetre and create a comfortable space for two children.
