How do you design a room for three children when you only have 11.44 m² available? In this project, the goal was to create a comfortable space for a 5-year-old boy, an 8-year-old girl and an 11-year-old boy. The room measures approximately 5.2 × 2.2 m, so the main challenge was to make maximum use of its length and height without making the interior feel overcrowded.

This project shows that even in a relatively small and narrow room, it is possible to combine three sleeping spaces, two full-size study stations, a play area for the youngest child, spacious wardrobes, shelving, book and LEGO storage, as well as space for a TV.

The design is based on a bright and timeless colour palette. White and warm wood tones create a neutral base that works well for children of different ages and makes it easy to update the character of the room in the future through accessories and decorations.

## Room design for three children – the biggest functional challenge

A shared room for siblings should respond to the needs of each child. In this case, the age difference is significant – the youngest user is 5 years old, while the oldest is 11.

Each child therefore needs a slightly different type of space. The older children require comfortable places for homework, as well as storage for books and school supplies, while the 5-year-old mainly needs a play area and easily accessible toy storage.

The project includes several clearly defined zones:

- a sleeping area for three children,

- a study area for the two school-age children,

- a play area for the youngest child,

- storage for clothes, books and toys,

- space for LEGO collections and models,

- a multimedia area with a TV.

Thanks to this layout, all the key functions have been incorporated into a single room while maintaining a comfortable circulation path through the centre of the space.

## Three sleeping spaces in a small room

One of the most important elements of the project was the sleeping area. Placing three traditional beds next to one another would take up almost the entire room, so the design makes use of the vertical space instead.

A tall built-in structure with three sleeping levels was designed. This solution allows one part of the room to accommodate sleeping space for all three children, leaving the remaining area available for studying, playing and storage.

The wooden bed structure was designed to match the rest of the built-in furniture. The light wood finish ensures that, despite its considerable size, the furniture does not visually overwhelm the interior.

Curtains were added to partially separate the individual sleeping areas. In a room shared by siblings, the possibility of creating a more private and intimate space becomes especially important as the children grow older.

Lighting integrated around the bed structure additionally highlights the furniture and provides soft, pleasant illumination in the evening.

## Two desks for school-age children

The 8-year-old girl and the 11-year-old boy both need comfortable study stations for everyday schoolwork. For this reason, the project includes one long shared desk designed for two users.

Each child has their own place at the desk, a comfortable chair and an individual desk lamp. Spacious drawers under the worktop provide storage for notebooks, books and other school supplies.

An important advantage of this arrangement is the location of the study area close to the window. Natural daylight entering the room improves comfort when using the desk during the day.

## The wall above the desk as a practical organiser

In a small room, it is important to make good use of the wall space as well. Perforated organiser panels were installed above the desks, allowing shelves, containers and small accessories to be arranged freely.

Thanks to this solution, the desktop does not have to be cluttered with school supplies. Each child can have their own designated space for pencils, scissors, notes or decorations.

Above the workstations, a large open shelving unit provides additional storage. It can be used for books, decorations, collections and items related to the children's interests.

## Space for LEGO and the older son's interests

One of the 11-year-old boy's main interests is LEGO. For this reason, the design includes open shelves that allow completed models to be displayed.

The tall shelving units make use of the space right up to the ceiling, providing a large amount of storage without taking up valuable floor area.

As the child grows, the same shelving can change its purpose. Initially it may be used for LEGO models, while later it can accommodate books, collections or other personal items.

The children's interests – LEGO, Minecraft, animals, princesses and cars – were not introduced as dominant decorative themes throughout the entire room. This prevents the interior from becoming too childish too quickly. Favourite themes can instead appear in easily replaceable decorations, toys, prints and accessories.

## A separate play area for the 5-year-old

The youngest boy has his own space designed to suit his height and current needs. A low table with a small stool can be used for drawing, building with blocks, playing with cars or doing simple arts and crafts.

Easily accessible storage containers are positioned on both sides of the table. This allows the child to take out toys independently and put them away afterwards.

Small bookshelves have also been installed on the wall. Their accessible height means that the youngest child can reach the books without assistance.

The play area is also located close to the TV, allowing this part of the room to serve several functions depending on the family's needs.

## A spacious wardrobe in a room for three children

With three children sharing one room, a large amount of storage is essential. The project therefore includes a tall wardrobe unit extending almost to the ceiling.

Light, smooth fronts without unnecessary decorative details visually calm the interior. The wardrobe is combined with open shelving finished in natural wood, so the entire composition does not appear as one large and heavy block.

The wardrobes can be used for clothes, textiles and larger items, while the open shelves are ideal for belongings used on a daily basis.

Custom-made furniture is particularly useful in small children's rooms because it allows spaces to be used efficiently where standard furniture would not fit as well.

## A TV without taking up valuable floor space

The TV was mounted directly on the wall. This made it possible to eliminate an additional TV cabinet, which would unnecessarily restrict circulation in a room only around 2.2 m wide.

The youngest child's play area is located below the screen, allowing one wall to perform several functions at the same time.

This is a particularly useful solution in small rooms – instead of allocating a separate part of the room to every function, a carefully designed layout can combine several uses within the same area.

## A light colour palette that visually enlarges the room

The room measures approximately 5.2 × 2.2 m and is therefore relatively long and narrow. For this reason, the colour palette was deliberately limited to light shades.

The dominant colours and materials are:

- white,

- warm beige,

- natural light wood,

- soft neutral fabrics,

- small black accents.

Black chairs and smaller furnishing elements create contrast against the light furniture without dominating the interior.

The wooden blinds also match the colour of the built-in furniture and flooring, helping to maintain a cohesive overall look.

## Lighting in a children's room

Several types of lighting were used in the project. In addition to the main ceiling lighting, there are individual desk lamps and subtle LED lighting integrated into selected pieces of built-in furniture.

The lighting highlights the tall shelving units and the bed structure while also creating a warmer and more welcoming atmosphere in the evening.

Dividing the lighting into several independent sources is particularly practical in a room shared by children – one child can study while the others use a different part of the room.

## How to design a narrow room for three children?

In a room approximately 2.2 m wide, maintaining a comfortable circulation path is essential. For this reason, most of the functions have been arranged along the walls.

The sleeping area makes use of the room's height, the desks form one continuous work zone, and the wardrobes extend up towards the ceiling. This keeps the central part of the room as open as possible.

Designing a small room for several children should not simply involve trying to fit in as much furniture as possible. The most important goal is to combine functions in a way that allows the children to use the room comfortably every day.

## A room for three children should grow with them

Future needs were also an important consideration in this project. The 5-year-old will soon begin school, while the 11-year-old boy will gradually enter his teenage years.

For this reason, the base of the interior remains neutral and modern. Instead of using large thematic decorations related only to the children's current interests, timeless materials and colours were chosen.

By changing posters, textiles, decorations or the items displayed on the shelves, the character of the room can easily be adapted to the children's age in the future without the need for another major renovation.

## Can a room for three children be arranged in 11.44 m²?

Yes. This project shows that a room measuring 11.44 m² can accommodate three sleeping spaces, two study stations, a play area, a large wardrobe, shelving, storage and a TV.

However, the key is to adapt the furniture and layout precisely to the actual dimensions of the room. In small interiors, even a difference of several centimetres can affect everyday comfort, so the arrangement should be based on an accurate floor plan and measurements.

## FAQ – room design for three children

## How do you arrange a room for three children in a small space?

The best approach is to make use of vertical space. Bunk beds or multi-level sleeping structures reduce the amount of floor area needed for beds. Tall wardrobes and shelving provide additional storage, while one long shared desk can create study stations for several children.

## Can three beds fit into an 11 m² room?

Yes, but in a room of this size, bunk beds or custom-built sleeping structures are usually more practical than three separate beds. They make use of the height of the room and leave more floor space available for other functions.

## How do you divide a shared room between siblings of different ages?

It is worth creating separate zones that reflect the needs of each child. Older children can have their own study and storage spaces, while the younger child can have a lower table, toy containers and easily accessible shelves. Curtains or other lightweight dividers can also be used around shared sleeping areas to provide more privacy.

## How do you arrange a room for three children aged 5, 8 and 11?

In this situation, it is important to combine the needs of a preschool child with those of school-age children. The two older children primarily need comfortable desks and storage for books and school supplies, while the 5-year-old requires a dedicated play area. It is also important to provide plenty of storage and three comfortable sleeping spaces.

## Is custom-made furniture worth considering in a small children's room?

Yes. When space is very limited, custom-made furniture allows almost the entire available height and width of the room to be used efficiently. It is especially useful for bunk beds, tall wardrobes, shelving and shared study stations.

## Which colours work well in a room for three children?

A neutral base made up of white, beige and light wood is a good choice. It visually enlarges the room and can easily be adapted to children of different ages. Colour can then be introduced through toys, textiles, posters and other accessories.
