Designing a room for a 10-year-old girl is a special moment – the space must no longer respond only to the needs of play, but above all support learning, development, and the first signs of individual style. In this project, we created an interior arrangement that combines natural aesthetics, functionality, and timeless solutions.

This is an interior design based on ready-made IKEA furniture, showing that even in a space of less than 15 m2, it is possible to create a harmonious, comfortable, and well-planned room for years to come. The room, measuring 5.2 x 2.8 m, required a very thoughtful approach to the functional layout, the proportions of the furniture, and maintaining freedom of everyday use. We wanted the interior to be bright, calm, practical, and at the same time mature enough not to lose its appeal after just one season.

## What you will learn from this article

- how to functionally plan a room for a 10-year-old girl in a space of less than 15 m2,

- how to use IKEA furniture such as PAX, HEMNES, and KALLAX in a cohesive interior design,

- how to divide the room into study, relaxation, and storage zones,

- which materials and colors work well in a school-age child’s room,

- how to avoid the most common mistakes when arranging a room for a 10-year-old girl,

- why it is worth choosing solutions that grow together with the child.

## Room analysis – layout, needs, and design assumptions

The designed room measures 5.2 x 2.8 m, which gives just under 15 m2. It is a narrow and elongated interior, so from the very beginning it was clear that we could not afford random furniture placement. In rooms like this, the key issue is maintaining a balance between storage capacity and visual lightness. Too many bulky pieces placed in the wrong locations could visually narrow the room and disrupt comfortable circulation.

Our task was to create a room for a 10-year-old girl, meaning a user who already has specific needs related to learning, storage, rest, and her own sense of aesthetics. This is no longer a typically childlike room, but it also cannot be too serious or too adult. We wanted an arrangement that would be cozy and subtle, but at the same time versatile enough to serve well in the years ahead.

The most important design goals were very specific. We wanted to make the most of the room’s length, clearly separate functional zones, provide a large amount of storage space, and create a comfortable place for studying with access to natural daylight. It was also important to preserve the light character of the interior, which is why from the beginning we chose a bright color base, natural visual materials, and furniture with a calm, timeless style.

## Design concept – a functional room with IKEA furniture

The entire concept was based on ready-made IKEA furniture, which we combined in a visually cohesive and functional way. This is a solution that very often works well in children’s and teen rooms, because it allows for sensible budget management while also offering a great deal of freedom in planning the interior. In this project, we used the IKEA PAX wardrobe, HEMNES desk, HEMNES bed, and KALLAX shelving units.

It was important for us that the furniture should not look like a random set purchased separately, but rather like a thoughtfully designed interior. That is why we paired it with a consistent color palette, light decorations, subtle lighting, and natural wood flooring. As a result, the room gained a calm, harmonious character and became an interior inspiration that can realistically be translated into everyday life.

## IKEA PAX wardrobe – spacious built-in storage that organizes the space

One of the most important elements of the project is the built-in system based on IKEA PAX. In a room for a 10-year-old girl, storage is extremely important, because in addition to clothes, there also needs to be space for textiles, school accessories, toys, games, books, and many small items that can very quickly create chaos. For this reason, we opted for a tall, spacious built-in unit arranged in such a way that it organizes the interior and makes use of the room’s length.

The PAX wardrobe offers the possibility of flexible interior organization – shelves, rails, baskets, and drawers can be adapted to the child’s current needs. This is especially important in a room that is intended to serve for years. This type of built-in storage is practical not only functionally, but also visually. Instead of several different storage pieces, we have one strong element that organizes the composition of the interior and allows us to reduce the excess equipment in the remaining part of the room.

## HEMNES desk – a comfortable study zone by the window

The study zone was located by the window, which was one of the core functional assumptions. We positioned the HEMNES desk so that the user could benefit from natural daylight during the day. This is very important not only from the point of view of comfort, but also for study hygiene and concentration. A well-lit workstation improves the comfort of doing homework, drawing, reading, and all everyday activities at the desk.

We chose the HEMNES model because it has a classic, timeless form that fits well into the calm character of the interior. The desk does not dominate the space, but it provides a sufficient working surface. In addition, a wall organizer appeared above the desk, supporting order and allowing the display of small decorations, notes, or school supplies. These types of solutions are very important in a school-age child’s room, because order around the study area has a real impact on everyday organization.

## HEMNES bed – a relaxation zone with additional storage

The second very important element of the arrangement is the HEMNES bed, which combines a relaxation function with practical storage. In a room with an area of less than 15 m2, every additional drawer matters, so choosing a multifunctional piece of furniture was a natural decision. Under the bed, you can store bedding, seasonal textiles, toys, or other items that do not need to remain visible at all times.

From an aesthetic point of view, the bed fits very well into the character of the entire arrangement. It has a simple, visually light form and serves as a calm base for softer decorative elements such as cushions, a bedspread, or delicate wall wallpaper. Thanks to this, the sleeping zone is cozy but not overly sweet. This is very important in designs for girls aged 8–12, where it is easy to slip into an overly childish style. We chose subtlety and timelessness.

## IKEA KALLAX shelving units – modularity and flexible storage

In the project, we also used IKEA KALLAX shelving units, which work wonderfully in children’s and youth rooms. Their greatest advantage is modularity. They can be used to store books, decorations, organizer boxes, notebooks, games, or personal belongings, and the layout can easily be adapted to changing needs.

In this arrangement, the shelving units are not a heavy dominant piece of furniture, but rather a complement to the whole composition. They help maintain order while also allowing a few carefully selected accessories to be displayed. In a child’s room, it is very important to maintain balance – we want neither sterility nor an excess of small items. KALLAX offers a lot of freedom in building that balance.

## Functional zones – how we divided the 15 m2 room

One of the key elements of this interior arrangement was a clear division into functional zones. In children’s and youth rooms, this is an absolute essential, because a well-organized space makes everyday use easier and helps maintain order.

## Study zone

The study zone was located by the window, where access to natural daylight is best. The desk, comfortable chair, and wall organizer create a place that supports concentration and daily work. We made sure that this part of the room would be tidy and visually calm, because an excess of decorations in the direct vicinity of the desk often causes distraction.

## Relaxation zone

The relaxation zone was built around the HEMNES bed. Soft textiles, subtle color tones, and a delicate wall background make this part of the room cozy and calming. It is a place not only for sleeping, but also for reading, resting, and spending quiet time.

## Storage zone

The storage zone includes both the PAX built-in unit, additional KALLAX modules, and storage in the bed. Thanks to this, we managed to separate different categories of items and avoid the situation in which everything ends up in one place. This kind of division is very helpful in everyday functioning and teaches the child good organizational habits.

## Circulation zone

Circulation itself also plays an important role. Arranging the furniture along the walls allowed us to keep a comfortable passage throughout the entire length of the room. The room is not cluttered, and every element has its logical place. This is especially important with proportions of 5.2 x 2.8 m, where an incorrect layout could very quickly disturb ergonomics.

## Material details – naturalness, durability, and lightness

In this project, we focused on materials and finishes that build a warm, calm atmosphere while also being practical in everyday use. The natural wood tone of the floor warms the interior and balances the light furniture. This is very important, because white or cream furnishings without the proper contrast could make the arrangement feel too flat and deprived of depth.

Woven elements and textures inspired by nature also play a major role. A woven ceiling lamp and a light side table add coziness and a slightly more lifestyle-oriented character to the interior. These are exactly the details that make the interior design not merely functionally correct, but a complete, harmonious composition. It is also worth noting the textiles – the curtains, cushions, and rug all have soft, subdued finishes that give the room a pleasant, homely atmosphere.

We wanted the materials to be not only aesthetic, but also practical. In a child’s room, durability is extremely important, which is why surfaces that are easy to keep clean and resistant to everyday use work better than solutions that are very striking but not very practical.

## Interior color palette – beige, white, and natural wood

The interior color palette was based on a bright, warm, and natural range. Dominating here are off-whites, delicate beiges, subtle sandy shades, and natural wood. This combination works very well in children’s and youth rooms, because it builds a calm atmosphere, visually enlarges the space, and offers great flexibility when changing accessories.

In the case of a room for a 10-year-old girl, we wanted to move away from obvious, overly sweet associations. Instead of strong pink or intense motifs, we chose a base with a more universal and elegant character. Thanks to this, the interior will not become outdated too quickly, and the user will be able to change its feel easily with accessories, textiles, or wall decorations.

This is an approach that we very often recommend to clients as well. A neutral base does not mean boredom. Quite the opposite – it gives greater freedom and makes it possible to create a more refined interior arrangement that remains relevant despite changing trends.

## Comments from the design team – why this room works so well

*When designing this room, from the very beginning we thought of it as a transitional interior between the world of childhood and a more youthful stage. This is the point at which functionality begins to matter just as much as aesthetics. From our experience, the greatest number of mistakes appears precisely when a room for a 10-year-old girl is designed either too childishly or too seriously. What is needed here is balance.*

*In this project, consistency was particularly important to us. The IKEA furniture was chosen not because it is popular, but because it responds well to the specific needs of this interior. PAX provides capacity, HEMNES ensures a classic character and practical functions, and KALLAX introduces flexible storage. The whole design was refined so that the room would be organized, soft in its reception, and ready for the next stages of growing up.*

*From the perspective of the Fabryka Projektów team, we greatly value interiors that do not shout with their form, but work well on a daily basis. This project is exactly that – subtle, natural, and refined in its proportions. It is an interior inspiration that can easily be translated into a real home, without the feeling that it is an arrangement “only for looking at.”*

## FAQ – 10 questions and answers

## How should you arrange a room for a 10-year-old girl so that it is functional?

The best approach is to divide the interior into clear zones: study, relaxation, and storage. It is also worth choosing multifunctional furniture and a neutral color base that allows the room to be easily refreshed with accessories.

## Does IKEA furniture work well in a child’s room?

Yes, provided that it is well matched to the layout of the room and the real needs of the user. Systems such as PAX, HEMNES, and KALLAX are functional, aesthetic, and easy to adapt.

## What kind of desk should you choose for a 10-year-old girl?

Preferably one that provides a comfortable worktop for studying and can be placed by the window. The right height and the ability to maintain order around the workstation are also important.

## How can you visually enlarge a 15 m2 room?

Bright colors, visually light furniture, natural light, and an organized layout all help. It is also important to limit the number of random accessories.

## Is a bed with drawers a good solution?

Definitely yes. In smaller rooms, extra storage space under the bed makes organization much easier and reduces the need for additional furniture.

## What colors work best in a room for a 10-year-old girl?

Light beiges, off-whites, warm grays, and natural wood work very well. This palette is calm, timeless, and gives a great deal of arrangement flexibility.

## Should a room for a 10-year-old girl already feel more youthful?

It should rather feel somewhere in between – not too childlike, but also not excessively adult. The best solution is a calm base and subtle decorations that match the child’s age.

## How should storage be organized in a child’s room?

The best solution is to divide functions: clothes in the wardrobe, books and school items on shelves, and less frequently used objects in drawers or boxes. This type of layout helps keep things tidy.

## Can a narrow room be arranged comfortably?

Yes, but it requires a good plan. Most often, arranging furniture along the walls and avoiding bulky forms that take up the central circulation area works best.

## Is it worth ordering a professional children’s room design?

Yes, because a well-prepared interior design helps avoid costly mistakes, makes better use of the available space, and creates an environment suited to the lifestyle of the child and the whole family.
